Setup Goals for your site
What is your site supposed to do? Why is it there?
These are 2 very important questions that need to be assessed in order to get a better idea of what the site should do and how it should function. Whether a websites purpose is for information or to gain more leads/sales it is important to know what the goals should be. That way there is a better chance for success in the long run.
Know Your Budget
This goes hand in hand with setting up your goals. If you have a 1k budget then you know what you have to work with. Many sales people will sell you the moon when you can only afford a picture of the moon. This doesn’t need to be shared with any companies that your requesting quotes from, but its nice to have readily available.
Study the Competition
Know what your competition does well. This way the project knows which directions to take ever further.
Have a deadline
Not having a deadline means the project can go on forever. By having a set date for the site to go live freelancers or design agencies can give you better estimates/quotes.
Have Measurable Metrics
Before switching the site have the designer/developer add Google Analytics to your current site. You can then study traffic flows and know how many visitors are coming to the site.
